Patient Advocate FAQ

Feeling overwhelmed by medical decisions? You’re not alone.

Many families come to patient advocacy because they feel unsure, exhausted, or afraid of making the “wrong” choice. A patient advocate helps bring clarity, organization, and confidence—so you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

👉 If you’re wondering whether patient advocacy is right for you, a Discovery Meeting is the best place to start.

What is a Patient Advocate?

A patient advocate is a trained professional who helps individuals and families navigate the healthcare system. This may include understanding diagnoses and treatment options, preparing for doctor appointments, coordinating care, reviewing medications, and ensuring your voice is heard so you can make informed decisions about your health or the care of a loved one.

Who can benefit from a Patient Advocate?

Patient advocacy services are helpful for:

  • Older adults and individuals with chronic or complex medical conditions
  • Families caring for aging parents or loved ones with disabilities
  • Individuals who feel overwhelmed, confused, or unsure how to navigate medical care
  • Anyone who wants support, clarity, and confidence when making healthcare decisions

You do not need to be in a crisis to benefit from a patient advocate.

How is an independent patient advocate different from a hospital or insurance advocate?

Independent patient advocates work for you—not for hospitals, insurance companies, or healthcare systems. This means your needs, preferences, and goals are always the priority. Independent advocates are free from conflicts of interest and provide unbiased guidance and support.

What types of services do you provide?

Services may include:

  • Intake meetings and care planning
  • Medical history organization and documentation
  • Medication reviews
  • Appointment preparation and attendance (in person or virtual)
  • Care coordination and provider communication
  • Emergency planning tools (such as an Emergency Face Sheet)
  • Ongoing advocacy, coaching, and concierge support

Services are offered in structured packages based on your needs.

Do you attend doctor appointments?

Yes. I can attend appointments in person or virtually, depending on availability and location. I help prepare questions in advance, take notes, clarify information, and ensure concerns are addressed so nothing important is missed.

Do you replace a doctor, nurse, or case manager?

No. A patient advocate does not provide medical diagnoses or treatment. Instead, I work alongside your healthcare providers to help you understand recommendations, communicate effectively, and make informed choices.

Where do you provide services?

In-person services are available in Central Ohio, primarily Franklin and Pickaway Counties. Virtual services are available for clients throughout Ohio.

Is patient advocacy covered by insurance or Medicare?

Patient advocacy services are typically private-pay and not covered by insurance or Medicare. However, many clients find that advocacy services help prevent costly mistakes, delays in care, and unnecessary stress.

How do I get started?

The first step is an Intake Meeting, where we review your situation, identify needs, and create an action plan. From there, you can choose the service package that best fits your goals.

Is patient advocacy confidential?

Yes. All services are provided with strict respect for privacy and confidentiality. Information is only shared with your consent and in accordance with applicable laws.

What if I’m not sure what services I need?

That’s very common—and completely okay. The intake process is designed to help clarify your needs and recommend the right level of support. You are never locked into more services than you need.
