If you or a loved one has surgery coming up, don’t overlook the pre-surgical consultation with the anesthesiologist. It’s more than a formality—it’s a key safety step that could impact your recovery and your life.
Why it Matters
An anesthesiologist is the physician responsible for keeping you safe, stable, and pain-free during surgery. They assess your health risks, customize your anesthesia plan, and monitor you closely throughout the procedure. This consult ensures they have all the info they need to prevent complications like breathing issues, medication interactions, or unexpected reactions.
Their Role During Surgery
Your anesthesiologist doesn’t just knock you out and leave. They’re in the OR the entire time, managing:
- Your vital signs (heart rate, oxygen, blood pressure)
- Your level of consciousness and pain control
- Any emergencies or sudden changes in condition
They’re basically your body’s co-pilot while the surgeon does their work.
Anesthesiologist Consult
The consult is not just listening to the doctor, it is a conversation with the doctor. Be prepared to ask these questions:
- What type of anesthesia will I receive—and why?
- What are the risks and side effects for someone with my health history?
- Will I be intubated (have a breathing tube)?
- How will my pain be managed after surgery?
- Who will be monitoring me during surgery, and how?
This consult is your opportunity to partner with your anesthesia team, reduce surgical risks, and have a smoother recovery. Take it seriously.
Bring your questions—and your medication list. The doctors really appreciate a prepared list of medications. It reduces stress and anxiety for you and the doctors.
